Monuments for the Unseen

2014

That frustrated desire is there, to touch nature, even to create it. But something else is in play too, pertaining to representation and how what’s seen might parallel what’s understood. An iceberg is a thing mostly unrepresented: it’s a synechdoche, representing the whole through a part. Read more

Shaped Views

2014

Temporarily altered the shape of a tree top by tying ropes to various branches and pulling them to one side. In the photographs this looks like a compositional correction, something of course that could be more easily achieved digitally. But the emphasis in the work is on physical, sculptural process and the implicit effort involved […]

Study on echoes

2014

The drawings in the Study on Echoes series stem from the artist´s walks in the forest, where he has immortalised sights through a piece of glass. The glass casts reflections on the scenery. Looking at nature through a piece of glass is a reference to the Claude glass, a sort of pre-photographic lens.

Structure for Birds

2007

Photographed in the harsh and vast Catalan Pyrenees, Antas utilised the location to continue his direct interventions within the landscape to find new ways to relate with his surroundings. Birds, a feature of most landscapes – urban or remote, act as a reminder of our inertia whether or not we can see them. In his […]

Low lying cloud formations

2006-2007

The ‘Intervention’ series feature photographs of low lying mist and clouds hovering in park landscapes. On first viewing the images appear absurd and make believe which, in many ways they are. Antas explains that the clouds were artificially created, mimicking nature and momentarily changing the landscape which he captures in a single frame.

Landscape

2007

With a glimmer of the Romantic sublime that appears throughout the history of mountain painting, Landscape was shot, in a remote part of the Pyrenees, on the borders between France and Spain. There is a sense of a threshold between dream and waking, between vision and the presence of an equally strong obstacle to vision, as […]
